From Naples, Positano involves driving to Sorrento (60–90 minutes) and then continuing east along the Amalfi road (roughly 30–60 minutes in good traffic). Total one-way journey time from Naples is typically 90–150 minutes. Return timing is the planning priority.
The town is built on steep terraces connected by steps and narrow lanes. Getting from the main road to the beach involves a significant descent — and, more importantly, a significant ascent on the return. Positano is not suitable for limited mobility visitors. Travel Intensity: moderate-to-demanding for the town itself.
The town rewards slow exploration more than any checklist. The beach, the small piazze, the ceramics and fashion boutiques, the terrace cafés and the views back along the coast are the substance of a Positano day. Allow at least 2–3 hours in the town.
Return timing from Positano is the highest-risk element of any Amalfi Coast day. The road back to Naples in late afternoon is single-lane in sections and heavily congested in summer. Build at least 90 minutes of contingency beyond your calculated journey time.
