Herculaneum is smaller and more compact than Pompeii — you can cover the main highlights in 90 minutes to two hours, making it a more manageable choice for shorter calls or for visitors who want depth over scale. What it lacks in spectacle it compensates for in detail and intimacy.
The preservation is genuinely astonishing. The House of the Neptune Mosaic has an intact floor-to-ceiling mosaic. The carbonised wooden beams of the House of the Bicentenary are still in place. The wine bar (thermopolium) has its original counter and storage jars. These are not reconstructions — they are the original objects in their original positions.
Travel Intensity: moderate. The site is more compact than Pompeii but involves steps, narrow passageways and uneven Roman paving. It is not step-free, but shorter distances make it more manageable for many mobility levels.
Herculaneum sits below the modern town of Ercolano. From Naples, it is slightly closer than Pompeii — approximately 10–12 km, typically 20–30 minutes by road in good traffic, or reachable by Circumvesuviana train. Check current transport information before travelling.
