Pompeii fits a half-day excursion on most standard port calls and involves manageable transit of 30–45 minutes from the terminal.
The Amalfi Coast requires 90–150 minutes of transit to reach Positano from Naples, plus road time between towns. Return timing is the highest-risk element of any Amalfi day.
Both are extraordinary. The question is almost entirely about your call length and how much road time you are willing to accept.
Editorial verdict
Choose Pompeii on any call length — especially if it is your first time in Naples. Choose the Amalfi Coast on a long call when you have already seen Pompeii, or if coastal scenery is your priority. Never choose the Amalfi Coast on a short call.
| Category | Pompeii | Amalfi Coast |
|---|---|---|
| One-way transit from Naples | 30–45 minutes | 90–150 minutes to Positano |
| Minimum call length | Most port calls — half-day format works | Long port call only |
| Return-timing risk | Low — manageable in most conditions | High — afternoon coastal road is notoriously slow |
| Travel Intensity | Moderate-demanding — large exposed site | Easy-moderate road; stepped Positano |
| First-time Naples | The clear first choice | Better on a return visit |
